SOUL SOUND

Baroque Period

Some of the most popular composers and pieces in Western Classical Music can be found during the Baroque Period (1600-1760). Some of the most significant harmonic and instrumental inventions occur during this period. Since the Renaissance, Italy, Germany, England, and France have dominated the musical landscape, each influencing the other through conventions and style.

Instrumental music was composed and performed in tandem with vocal works, each of equal importance to the Baroque. The virtuosity that began among the elite Renaissance performers flourished in the Baroque. Consider the Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, or the Concertos that Vivaldi composed for his student performers. This, on the other hand, leads to significant instrumental developments and, thanks to the aristocratic support of Catherine Medici, the birth of the Violin.

JS Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Albinoni, Purcell, Monteverdi, Scarlatti, and Corelli are among the most important composers.

EXAMPLE OF MUSIC

J.S. Bach - Prelude

A Prelude is a piece of music that traditionally leads into something else, common examples from the Baroque period being a fugue or a suite of dances. ... Building on Bach's example, sets of preludes covering the 24 major and minor keys became commonplace in the early 19th century.

Arcangelo CORELLI: Sarabande

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was an Italian composer and violinist. His instrumental works established the chamber music style and form of the late baroque era, and he founded the modern school of violin playing.
