SOUL SOUND

Rhythm and Blues

Rhythm and Blues is a genre that is mostly influenced from other genres such as jazz and blues. The genre started in 1947, the year that Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine coined and replaced its previous term the “race music”. What differs from the other genres are its consistent rhythm in a combination of jazz and blues from the original genres and mainly characterized in rhythmic melodies.

The artists that performed the specified genre were mostly in the form of groups / R&B bands that contributed such as The Rolling Stones’ famous song “Sympathy For The Devil”. The lyrics of the mentioned song were inspired by a book by Mikhail Bulgakov that is titled “The Master and Margarita”. The book contains contents about the devil who is a sophisticated socialite, a "man of wealth and taste.". In a different Band such as The Yardbirds and their song, "Evil Hearted You'' written by Graham Gouldman which provided a moody sound to the song, the band was able to turn into a hit record. The song marked the final instance in which the Yardbirds tapped the songwriting talents to a non-member of their band

There are other songs that fall in the mentioned genre but evolved to a new one known as Contemporary R&B such as “That what I Like” by Bruno Mars composed in the key of B minor at a tempo of around a hundred and thirty beats per minute. The song features the artist in the center of the track, supported by enthusiastic backing vocals accompanied by a few finger-snaps, a silky pre-chorus, as well as few punctuating ad libs. It described the single as an R&B groove, supporting or mostly in connections to the other genres such as the new jack swing music of the late 1980s and early 1990s". Other songs to the specified genre are “Live out your Love” by Kem which mostly focus on a romantic approach and the artist is considered as the most refined-sounding R&B musician today. The approach was more classic to the original genre which results in a nostalgic vibe and of course, romantic to the specified demographic referred as an R&B enthusiast that prefer the original genre.
